Emerson's plea fro an "American Scholar." He is best known for
his book Wa/den, a reflection upon simple living in natural
surroundings, and his essay, Civi/ Disobedience, an argument for
individual resistance to civil government in moral opposition to an
unjust state.
Thoreau's books, articles, essays, journals, and poetry total
over 20 volumes. Among his lasting contributions were his writings
on natural history and philosophy, where he anticipated the methods
and findings of ecology and environmental history, two sources of
modern day environmentalism. His literary style interweaves close
natural observation, personal experience, pointed rhetoric,
symbolic meanings, and historical lore; while displaying a poetic
sensibility, philosophical austerity, and "Yankee" love of
practical detail. He was also deeply interested in the idea of
survival in the face of hostile elements, historical change, and
natural decay; at the same time imploring one to abandon waste and
illusion in order to discover life's true essential needs. Thoreau'
masterpiece Wa/den was based on his own experience at Walden Pond,
where he built himself a hut nearby and lived a simple life. Wa/den
can be interpreted from more than one perspective. It is a book on
self-culture and human perfectibility. Thoreau holds the belief
that man should live a self-sufficient life and strives to achieve
personal spiritual affection. (Chang 67) In this book, he records
how he tries to minimize his own needs on Walden Pond. He calls for
"simplicity, simplicity, simplicity....simplify! Simplify!"
repeatedly. He wanted to get back to the naked simplicity of life,
where he might "subdue and cultivate a few cubic feet of flesh,
chew the cud of his thoughts, and get to the very core of universe,
by living deep and sucking out all the marrow of life." His desire
was to love wisdom...to solve some problems of life, not
theoretically, but practically." For him, spiritual richness is
real wealth. He wanted neither to be interfered with nor to
interfere with others. And he declared, "I would not have anyone
adopt my mode of living, each should find out his own way, not his
neighbor's or his parents." Wa/den exhibits "Thoreau's calm trust
in the future and his ardent belief in the new generation of men
(Chang: 68)".
Thoreau's residence at the Walden Pond was interrupted by a day's
imprisonment for his refusal to pay a poll tax to a government that
supported the Mexico War.
